چکیده

in reticulocytes (Fig. 2). The correlation coefficients for GSH/PCV and reticulocyte count for each group on each sample day were not significant when compared with published critical values (13). Elevated GSH/PCV may indicate a unique biochemical response by avian red cells experiencing oxidant stress or a toxic mechanism involving reduced activity of a GSH-dependent enzyme such as glutathione peroxidase. More detailed biochemical studies are needed before these GSH data can be interpreted. Anemia was reported in earlier experimental studies of oil ingestion by birds, but it was not characterized and generally was not considered significant (5, 14). The amount of oil ingested by wild birds that become oiled is not known, and thus we cannot precisely evaluate the environmental implications of our experimental results. Subtle but significant changes in red cell life-span or function may occur at doses that do not produce overt anemia. Disturbances of red blood cell function potentially can affect many other body tissues. Pathological changes described in studies of oil ingestion by birds (4-6) may be, in some cases, secondary or tertiary responses to a primary dysfunction of the erythron. FREDERICK A. Climatic change: are we on the brink of a pronounced global warming?

If man-made dust is unimportant as a major cause of climatic change, then a strong case can be made that the present cooling trend will, within a decade or so, give way to a pronounced warming induced by carbon dioxide. By analogy with similar events in the past, the natural climatic cooling which, since 1940, has more than compensated for the carbon dioxide effect, will soon bottom out. Once t...

Global distributions of atmospheric carbon dioxide in the fossil-fuel era: a projection.

A model describing latitudinal mixing and accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere over the entire (projected) fossil-fuel era of human history but in the absence of climatic feedback is developed, including a new formulation of the oceanic sink term based on the tendency of atmospheric concentrations toward chemical and phase equilibrium with carbonic acid reactions in the deep oceans....

Vegetation sensitivity to global anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions in a topographically complex region

[1] Anthropogenic increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations may affect vegetation distribution both directly through changes in photosynthesis and wateruse efficiency, and indirectly through CO2-induced climate change. Using an equilibrium vegetation model (BIOME4) driven by a regional climate model (RegCM2.5), we tested the sensitivity of vegetation in the western United Sta...

Impacts of large-scale climatic disturbances on the terrestrial carbon cycle

BACKGROUND The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere steadily increases as a consequence of anthropogenic emissions but with large interannual variability caused by the terrestrial biosphere. These variations in the CO2 growth rate are caused by large-scale climate anomalies but the relative contributions of vegetation growth and soil decomposition is uncertain. We use a biogeochemical mod...

An effective and ecofriendly suggestion to decrease atmospheric carbon dioxide by using NH3 gas

Global warming is increasing permanently, because the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is rising continuously. According to National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere was 407 ppm in June 2016 and 413 ppm in April 2017 as a last record for now. If the effects of other greenhouse gases, such as CH4, N<su...

Effects of Topographic Factors on Carbon Sequestration in Astragalus Gossypinus (Case Study of Bazan Region, Kermanshah Province)

Increasing the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide is the main factor for the climatic change having some harmful consequences for the human health while there is no considerable effort for decreasing this accelerated global problem, yet. Kermanshah province located in the west of Iran has about 1,200,000 ha rangeland which is dominated by Astragalus sppas the more frequent shrub beinga...
